Myopia Management

What is Myopia Management?

Myopia Management is a treatment protocol aimed at preventing or slowing down the progression of myopia (nearsightedness).  Myopia progression is most common in the adolescent years, but can also occur at a very young age.  Hence, a myopia management program can be started as soon as an optometrist determines there is a high risk for progression.

What are the goals of Myopia Management?

The short-term goals are simply to reduce the frequency of prescription changes and provide better vision for kids between eye exams.  The long-term goals are to reduce the risk of adult-related eye diseases, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic maculopathy.

What are my treatment options for Myopia Management?

All of the treatment options employed at Little Elm Eye Care have been studied extensively and proven to be effective at controlling the progression of myopia.  Each treatment option is chosen and tailored based on the individual patient's needs.  Treatment options can be changed throughout the year if needed.

Atropine eye drops--A diluted form of a dilating drop instilled in each eye before bedtime.  Glasses or contact lenses would still need to be worn to see clearly.

MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses--Daily disposable contact lenses specifically designed to prevent the progression of myopia in children.

Orthokeratology--Contact lenses that are worn overnight while sleeping to reshape the cornea and slow myopia.

How does the Myopia Management program work at Little Elm Eye Care?

At Little Elm Eye Care, all Myopia Management programs include all visits associated with the program for one year.  Each program is different, so some programs will require more visits than others.  Visits unrelated to Myopia Management, like visits for eye infections or injuries, are not covered.  Depending on the program chosen by your doctor, all supplies related to the program are covered.  Atropine eye drops, MiSight 1 day contact lenses, and orthokeratology contact lenses will all be supplied at no extra charge.  The program allows for flexibility between options.  One treatment option can be changed with another within the year at no extra charge.
