Advantix for Dogs

Advantix for dogs is a topical canine flea medication that kills fleas and repels other parasites like the dog tick, mosquito and sand flies. Applied once a month, Advantix is also water-proof and can be used on puppies over 7 weeks old and adult dogs for month-long protection from parasites and insects.

Treating of Parasites

Advantix is a parasiticide that kills adult fleas and larvae using imidacloprid and permethrin. This dog medication also works as a prevention against ticks and mosquitoes which can carry illnesses like Lyme's disease, West Nile virus and heartworm, and may help prevent flea allergy dermatitis. Advantix also kills ticks that may already be living on your dog while preventing further infestations in the future.

The canine flea medication works immediately to kill fleas, though some fleas may appear again. These dog fleas can be treated through persistent application of the medication each month. Flea treatment should be a regular procedure for your pet, especially if your dog is outside often and at risk of being exposed to fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

Applying Advantix

Topical dog medication like Advantix should be applied between the shoulder blades and directly on the skin. Follow the dosage and application instructions on the packaging according to your dog's weight. After applying Advantix the dog medication will bind to the fat layer of the skin and spread over the dog's body, killing fleas and ticks while providing protection against other parasites. The ingredients in Advantix paralyze and kill parasites once they come in contact with the dog medication.

Precautions and Potential Side Effects

Advantix is made especially for dogs and should never be used on cats because it contains the ingredient permethrin, which can be dangerous in cats. If you have a house with cats and dogs, keep your dog away from any cats for 12 hours.

In dogs, Advantix can cause some side effects such as tingling, itching or sensitivity at the area of application, but these symptoms should stop after a couple of days. Talk to your veterinarian before using a canine flea medication on lactating and pregnant dogs or dogs that are on any other medications or undergoing medical treatments.

Preventing Dog Fleas

Advantix will kill and prevent dog fleas and parasites for up to a month at a time. Fleas that aren't yet in their larvae or adult stage of development may continue to affect your dog for another six weeks so owners should continue to use Advantix to completely treat parasites. Dogs that are exposed to other pets in a kennel or dog park should be treated for fleas or undergo regular parasite prevention treatment.

Owners should also clean and sterilize dog bedding of an infected dog and any other animals that may be exposed to the parasites. Vacuum areas of your home where your dog sleeps and plays, any cars or kennels your dog is transported in, and clean and treat outdoor areas.
